BLOOD testS FOR CHOLESTEROL/TRIGLYCERIDE ARE NECESSARY FOR THIS REASON:

This panel provides information about your blood levels of certain lipids (fats) and lipid-protein complexes.  Testing  is also important for monitoring whether life-style changes or medications are successfully lowering blood lipids. 

WHO SHOULD BE TESTED FOR CHOLESTEROL/TRIGLYCERIDE LEVELS: 

(1) All adults over the age of 20, as suggested by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the United States National Institutes of Health. 

(2) All individuals with a known heart disease 

(3) All individuals with a family history of heart disease.

At the age of 20 and at least every five years thereafter

Testing for Total Cholesterol; HDL (the "good") Cholesterol; LDL (the "bad") Cholesterol

Cholesterol and triglyceride metabolism abnormalities have been shown to be predictive of increased risk for disease of the arteries which predispose to heart attack and stroke (bleeding or clotting in the brain).

Because there are interventions which can significantly alter the levels of these factors, early knowledge of abnormal levels can allow you to take the necessary measures - to take action - and reduce your likelihood of  heart-related disease.

Blood tests that indicate abnormalities in your blood system- i.e., you are "out of normal range" - can alert you to take action.  That action might be a visit to a physician or simply a different diet and exercise.  In any case, "knowing" if something is wrong with you - and what is wrong - are the first steps to correction of a poor health condition.  A blood test can "keep you in the know" about your personal health!
